Playing piano songs by ear

Post by Calculative » Mon Dec 19, 2016 2:16 am

Someone please give me tips on how to play piano by ear,I'm trying to cover a song by Christmas.I have done the part for the right hand,but I could not figure out the chords for the other hand.

You can always audit the bassline note. If you know how chords are written on sheet music, it's typically like this;

A (/A)
B (/B)
C/B♭
DMaj9 -5 (/ D)

etc. The slash (/) symbol is meant to signify what bass note is to be played. You write it out when it's not the prime.

So this is practical when determining what chord is being played a lot of times. Haha I'm kinda tired so yeah but there you go! :D

I myself am not the greatest at playing by ear (as a matter of fact I suck at it) but when thinking of what chords it might be, just try thinking about the right-hand melody. The notes that are on the strong beat will more than likely be related to whatever chord is being played there.
